Avril Lavigne ‘died’ fourteen years ago and fans think they know what happened

From 2002 to 2007 the Canadian pop star won fans over with songs such as ‘Complicated’ and ‘Girlfriend’ as well as teaching us you can totally wear a tie over a T-shirt.

Of course, like most people in the public eye, Avril found herself the subject of rumour and gossip.

But it’s perhaps a recently re-surfaced conspiracy theory which has proven to be the most outlandish – and entertaining.

Avril has been admitted into the same dubious ‘celebrity impostor’ hall of fame populated by Paul McCartney and Eminem after a discussion claiming she’d died in 2003 and been replaced by a “clone” blew up.

As with most ridiculous conjecture, it began on Twitter.

User givenchyass reignited the bonfire after claiming the singer had been dead for a while, and now thousands of others have lost themselves down the rabbithole.

It predictably proved to be like catnip for other Twitter users and die-hard conspiracy theorists.

Their, erm, reasoning behind the theory was that Avril was only 18 when she was thrust into the spotlight, and soon found the paparazzi attention difficult to deal with.

Apparently, the lookalike’s name is Melissa Vandella “and they quickly became best friends.”

Not only this, but according to the theorists, Avril even got Melissa in the studio and – suspend your disbelief – taught her how to sing like her.

Melissa would supposedly take the heat off Avril, going out and about as her and would even walk the red carpet for her.

Apparently, the differences were clear to see.

Then tragedy struck for Avril in 2003.

The loss of her granddad is said to have been too much for the songstress who then, the theory goes on to say, took her own life.

Being something of a cash cow, however, her record company apparently decided to keep releasing songs by Avril, using Melissa.

“Evidence” is a strong word, but the theorists allege there’s plenty, such as the fact “Melissa” has different birthmarks than Avril Lavigne, and that Avril became very “nervous” when asked about the conspiracy in an interview.

The truth is Avril has been battling Lyme disease since 2015, as well as going through a divorce from her Nickelback frontman husband, Chad Kroeger.

Which probably explains why she’s not been in the public eye all that much.

Still, perhaps impostor rumours are like a badge of honour for celebrities.

You know people still care when they’ll pore over the minutiae of every photo of you ever taken.
